WHAT IS LINUX?
By linuxfoundation.org : Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. The operating system (OS) relays instructions from an application to, for instance, the computer's processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then sends the results back to the application via the operating system.

It's the same. "GNU / Linux", this term is used to refer to the fusion of two operating systems: the core or free Unix-like kernel called Linux developed by Linus Torvalds with the GNU project founded by Richard Stallman. Its development is one of the most prominent examples of free software without cost; all its source code can be used, freely modified and redistributed (Open-source code) by anyone under the terms of the GPL (GNU General Public License) and a number of free licenses.
